 2009 Respect Life Month

October is Respect Life Month, and Catholic Charities, Inc. Pro-Life Committee, in conjunction with the Catholic Diocese of Jackson, is gearing up for a month of pro-life activities. Below are suggestions for ways in which parishes may participate in Respect Life Month.

        Suggestions for Respect Life Month

  1. Mass for Life – All parishes are encouraged to participate in a Mass for Life  on October 4, 2009.  Each parish may utilize the liturgy guide from the USCCB.  Catholic Charities, Inc. Office of Parish Social Ministry purchased Respect Life packets that were mailed to each parish from the USCCB.  If you did not receive this guide, you may download this document here.
  2. Baby Bottle Drive – Parishes may purchase an extra-large baby bottle bank and place it at the back of the church for donations. Contact your Knights of Columbus chapter for information on purchasing bottles.  We encourage you to start this on Sunday, September 27, 2009, at the latest.  Bottles may be brought up with the gifts and presented on Respect Life Sunday. The proceeds from this event can go to local crisis pregnancy centers or Catholic Charities, Inc. Adoption & Maternity Program.* Please click here to download the list of crisis pregnancy centers in Mississippi that do not counsel on abortion.
  3. Parish Baby Shower – After the Mass on October 4, parishes may host a church wide baby shower to collect baby supplies to be shared with local crisis pregnancy centers or CCI Adoption & Maternity Program.  Contact your local Knights of Columbus chapter for details on hotsting the event.
  4. Catholic Youth for Life Drive – Youth and Catholic school students are encourgaged to bring diapers and wipes to Mass for Respect Life Sunday.  Donations can go to local crisis pregnancy centers or CCI Adoption & Maternity Program.
  5. Grillin for Life 2009 BBQ Cook-off – Sponsored by the Central Mississippi Knights of Columbus; October 16-17, 2009; Madison County Cultural Center.  For more information, please visit Mississippi Choose Life for more information.
  6. Encourage parishioners and community members to purchase a Choose Life car tag. Proceeds from the purchase of Choose Life car tags goes to help support crisis pregnancy centers across Mississippi.

*Catholic Charities, Inc. Adoption and Maternity Program received a total of 158 calls last year with 146 of those calls requesting abortion services.
